Here is a typical negative ground pinout for a clamshell HCN1020A (32 mode select), or HCN1022A (16 mode Talkaround - really 32 modes), or HCN1019A (16 mode), or HCN1023A (8 mode Talkaround - really 16 modes) and HLN4290A (8 mode operator select non-priority scan) control head. This is a 32 or 16 mode clamshell control head with an 8 mode System 90*s operator select non-priority scan select with display. The pinout is for the radio connector J1, control head conectors 22 pin black, 22 pin blue, 22 pin gray and 22 pin light purple.

The HCN1009A (8 mode) clamshell control head will not work unless it has diodes added. Without the diodes connected to Mode Strobe it will interfere with communications between the radio and the HLN4290A non-priority scan select board.

This clamshell control head internal mode select lead (BLK/WHT) is moved from Shield Ground on pin 21 of the black 22 pin connector to Mode Strobe on pin 5 of the black 22 pin connector.

• Important notice: If you have a HLN4760C Personality Board J1-33 is a DVP-XL line, not a Display Enable line. In this case JU14 should be installed and J1-33 should not be connected to anything except a DVP-XL control head (if you are using one) or to pin 7 of of the Black 22 pin connector (which is not connected inside the control head). Also jumper J21 should be in the A position. If it is in the B position then J1-5 becomes a DVP-XL line and it should only be connected to a DVP-XL control head. The example in the above table works with all other Personality Boards including the HLN4257 and TRN8861 which do not have jumper JU14.
• J1-33 Display Enable could also be connected to Black pin 7 and jumper JU-14 would be installed to activate Dispaly Enable.
• Sometimes a J1-34 Sidetone wire will be installed in a spare 22 pin connector that is not used and tied back to the cable. Sidetone is only hooked up inside the radio on "VXJ" models.

• The clamshell control head internal lead connected to the black connector pin 21 (J1101-21 Audio Shield) must be moved to the black connector pin 5 (J1101-5 Mode Strobe). This is required to allow the HLN4290A Operator Non-Priority Scan Select to work without interference from the clamshell control head. All 8 clamshell mode lines have isolation diodes that are controlled by the Mode Strobe.
• Any pin shown as -B with a number indicated pins internally shorted from the black connector to the blue connector. 3-B20 means black connector pin 3 is shorted to blue connector pin 20.
• J1-33 Display Enable might also be connected to pin 7 of the black connector if the Personality Board jumper JU-14 is installed. Also if JU-14 is installed the Display Enable wire can be moved to another pin on the J1 connector for other uses.

• When two pin numbers are separated by a dash (i.e. 8-18) it indicates the circuit board the connector plugs into shorts these pins together. 2-3-13 indicates all three pins are shorted together by the circuit board. Because the shorts are provided by the circuit board, they are missing when the connector is removed and the radio may not function until all the connectors are correctly installed.
