Introduction:

Motorola manuals have a revision letter at the end of the manual part number (i.e. 68P80100W51-O is an "O" revision and 68P81060E05-B is a "B" revision). These revision letters separate the older manuals from newer ones. The -O revision is for the original manual in that part number series. Keep in mind, that Motorola will sometimes supersede a series of manuals for a particular radio with a new manual that has a new part number. When they do this, the first manual with the new part number will be a -O revision, but it will be newer than any of the manuals with the old part number, regardless of the old manual revisions. For this reason, not all manuals with an "O" revision can be considered "OLD" manuals.

Motorola has been know to drop valuable information from manuals as they release newer revisions. When different internal circuits of a radio are redesigned and given new assembly numbers, the information (schematics, parts lists, etc.) for the old assembly number can be completely dropped in a newer revision manual. If you work on these radios, sometimes you may need a specific older or newer version of a manual. When I have the information I will attempt to point out important differences in different manual revisions.

• If you setup, modify or maintain your own Syntor X radio the appropriate Radio Service Manual is indispensable.
• As noted in the introduction there are also safety and handling instructions in these manuals that should not be overlooked or ignored.
• The HLN4915A Personality Board documentation is found in the 68P80100W51-O low band manual and 68P81060E05-A VHF manual (it is special version of an HLN4760A with 2 parts changed).
• The revision letter on the VHF manuals make a big difference in what frequency ranges or models of VHF radios are covered.
• If you want to retune your radio front end, the "VHF Test Memory Module HLN1074B" is a good reference manual that includes a retuning procedure (lots of additional service equipment is required). The procedure can be applied to other non-VHF radios with modified frequency programming. The 800 MHz radio service manual 68P81044E40 also has a modified version of this retuning procedure. I have not actually seen the 800 MHz Test Memory Module manual.
• If you have an old White Label PROM module and want to up upgrade it to an Orange Label EEPROM module, the "Field Retrofit Procedure for EEPROM Modules" explains how to perform the conversion (you have to supply the parts).
• The Low Band manuals are the best source for information on the receiver Extender. GE uses the term Extender for their vehicle repeater system, so do not confuse it with Motorola's Extender.

• If you have to hookup or modify any System 90*s accessories the "Accessory Group Installation Instructions" and any other appropriate System 90*s manuals are recommended. If you only use a clamshell control head, its documentation is already included in the Radio Service Manual.
• The "Code" is used as a reference in the CONTROL HEADS & ACCESSORIES section. This is to help locate the correct manual for your Syntor X System 90*s boards.

• Systems 90*s accessories that are not unique to the Syntor X may also work with other Motorola radios (i.e. Syntor and/or Mitrek and/or Micor, etc.).
• Some particular, but definitely not all Systems 90 and Systems 90*s accessories are compatible with the Syntor X radio line. The ones in the above list are compatible with the Syntor X. The list is very far from being complete.
• The 68P81102E27 Quick Call II manual is for the version that uses reeds. There is a newer one that does not use reeds that I have not located the manual for yet.
• The Voice Privacy Adaptor (VPA) is a simple frequency inversion voice scrambler. Unlike Securenet (DVP, DVP-XL, DES, etc.) no encryption key is required to decode a VPA scrambled signal, just any other VPA unit will decode any VPA transmission.
• The antenna manuals above come in handy with the low band radios because of their very wide bandwidth.

• The 68P80100W43 HHCH manual is the basic service / operating manual.
• The Hand Held Control Head Dual Radio Accessory Group manual covers a system of controlling two separate Syntor X radios with a single HHCH. The Motorola hardware required to implement this can be very hard to find.

• The above test equipment is called out in the "maintenance and troubleshooting" section of the radio service manuals.
• The R-1033A is an improved version of the basic S1056A. The R-1033A also has Sinad included. The R-133A comes in its own carrying case with a storage compartment lid.
• The RTL-4118A is a R-1033 test set installed inside the lid of a R-2001 service monitor instead of its own case.
• The RTL-4119A is a R-1033 test set installed inside the lid of a R-2200 service monitor instead of its own case.
• These are the only test equipment manuals I have part numbers for.

To help sort out the wide variety of 68P81060E05 version -O, -A, -B, -C service manuals and 68P06905Z77-A VHF Supplement manual, here is a table of different part numbers and the manual that covers them. Pink "WMR" manual revisions are also listed when they are the only known source of documentation. This is not a complete list of all the parts covered by each manual, just the major differences. Hopefully this will help if you need a VHF manual with information for your particular radio. Motorola manual revisions (pink and yellow sheets) may also contain information on board versions not found in any of the manuals.

• The bold part numbers are also found in the 68P8012W05-O Syntor X 9000 VHF service manual. The range 1 unified chassis A and B revision is also the same in the X 9000 manual.
• Some special radios will require more than one manual. Some radios mix and match parts from different service manuals (like a T83 frequency range 2 radio with a HLN4760A Personality Board (needs the -A or -B manual) and a HLN4240A Common Circuits Board (needs the -O manual).
• The -O version of the VHF radio service manual is the most specialized version. It is also missing the memory module, receiver pre-amplifier documentation and does not support or document the HLN5008A DVP Interface Board. It is the only manual to document the HLN4270A, which has some similarities to the HLN5008A. Instruction manual revisions numbers WMR-0019 and WMR-0143 add the receiver pre-amplifier and memory module documentation to the -O version manual.
• The HLN4270B Interface Board is documented in WMR-0098. This version added the Detector Mute Control that supports the optional Mobile Voice Storage MVS-20 accessory.
• Except for where they are mounted, the HLN4270A, HLN4270B, HLN4425A (these three are connected with a cable and mounted upside down above the Personality Board) or the HLN5008A (soldered in on the Personality Board) are mostly similar to each other. For more information see the note about "The pins marked DVP" on the Personality Board page.
• A radio with a HLN4270A, HLN4270B, HLN4425A or HLN5008A Interface Board requires the correct control head, accessories and cable be used with the radio (i.e. EMS control group, Single Tone Encoder or MDC-600, MVS-20, etc.) or the Personality Board must be re-jumpered. If this is not done the radio will not function correctly. The 110/10 watt radio also uses a HLN4270A, HLN4270B or HLN4425A board to provide the Hi/Low power relay driver circuit.
• Range 1 is 136 to 154.4 MHz. Range 2 is 150 to 174 MHz. These are both original factory tuning ranges.
• It appears that the HLN4240A Common Circuits Board can also be used with the 40/20 watt PA to provide EEPROM programmable Hi/Lo output power. I have 2 Canadian Syntor X 30 watt PA radios with the dual power HLN4240A installed in them. The 110/10 watt radio also requires a special HLD4116A PA deck not found in any other Syntor X radios.
• It would appear the early Syntor X VHF radios started out as T83 models rated at 110 watts (adjustable to 55 watts). The later T73 models use the same HLD4076A PA deck, but they were only rated for 100 watts (adjustable to 50 watts).
